Timing matters
Many plans have waiting periods. Buying after something breaks usually does not help for that problem, because contracts commonly exclude pre-existing conditions.

What to compare
Compare the monthly cost, service call fee, waiting period, coverage limits, contractor rules, and claim process. Then compare those details against the systems in your home that are most likely to make expensive noises.
